We are so thrilled by this portrait of our Pop-up Gallery.  We would like to clarify that this article reflects our fundraising goal, not the amount of funds actually attained at the event.  We have submitted a correction to the Washington Post, to whom we are truly grateful for their coverage of the event.  At this time, we are still awaiting the final tally from last week's event.  The final amount of funds generated by our inaugural Pop-up Gallery fundraiser will be available via our website as soon as financial reports have been submitted by our partners.  Thank you for your continued support!

Create A Cure Featured Artist: Monica de Gastyne

Hello, Creative People of DC!!!!  Today is the day of our first ever Pop-up Gallery.  It brings me great pleasure to share the biography of artist Monica de Gastyne with you just 12 short hours before the opening of our gallery event.  Please read on to learn more about Monica!

Acylic portrait artist Monica de Gastyne was born in Virginia in 1984. She grew up in Springfield with her three sisters and their mother. Ms. de Gastyne keeps her maiden name for her artwork to honor the heratige from which her talents came. She was in the 1st grade when she began drawing And profiting from detailed portraits. Since then, she has experimented with many different media, settled on acrylics, and is well underway to perfecting her technique, style, and signature.

Monica gained a firm foundation in drawing early on. She uses an approach to drawing the light rather than the object, granting the ability to draw just about anything she sees. She is self taught beyond her high school art education.

Ms. de Gastyne's work has been exhibited in Artomatic 2012, RAW Artists of DC July exhibition, and the Backlash exhibition for SOHO20 Gallery in New York City.  She is participating in Create A Cure to honor Connie O'Mara and her ongoing battle with Cancer, as well as the late Jim Collins.

Create A Cure Featured Artist: Rachel Bingaman

Hey there, Creatives!  Meet this week's Featured Artist, Rachel Bingaman!

"I'm a full-time freelance artist living in the D.C. area with my husband and two beautiful children. My oil paintings can be found in private collections all over the United States and Australia. For now, I focus primarily on contemporary and abstract landscapes and seascapes and lately have enjoyed creating more textured pieces as well.

My inspiration has come from all over, but the source remains the same: God. From the beauty he allows in nature to song to family and life events. His inspiration has allowed me to pull colors from past memories and present experience and mix them into something I think is fit for canvas. Sometimes, even the most mundane of moments finds itself transferred onto canvas and transformed into something beautiful."

Create A Cure Featured Artist: Nina Angelini Young

This week's Create A Cure Artist is an amazing mother, chef, mixologist, DJ, and probably other things I'm leaving out in addition to being a wonderfully generous, caring, and talented artist.  Please read on to learn more about the fabulous Nina Angelini Young!

"My name is Yanina Angelini and I am an Uruguayan-born artist and designer currently living in 
Fredericksburg Virginia.  From a young age I have been exposed to all sorts of art.  It became a love affair, bordering on obsession.  In addition to art, I have always been fascinated with anatomy.  I never imagined that these two could meld together and become such a big part of my life.



When the time came to choose a career, I went for what seemed logical and safe and chose to study nursing.  The more I learned about anatomy and how intricately created humans are, the stronger my inspiration and desire to create became. I began sketching again. The main subject being anatomy and medical conditions.

At church I met my best friends, fellow artists and family, Nate and Leah Lewis whom share the same fascinations as I. They encouraged me to pursue art and perfect my craft. When Nate founded an art collective, Somaphony, I felt home at last!

The purpose of my work (of my life) is to glorify God, the Creator.  I firmly believe that He is most pleased when we reflect His creative nature.  Romans 11:29 says 'For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.'

I now know that, all along, His plan and calling for me are to create!"

We are so grateful that your pursuit of your artistic calling has lead you to share your gifts with us, Nina.  Thank you for helping us to create something beautiful!

Create A Cure Featured Artist: Antonia Naglieri

This particular Featured Artist holds a very special place in my heart.  Antonia Naglieri has been my dear friend since Middle School.  When I shared the Create A Cure concept with my network, Antonia immediately responded with an outpouring of support, to include producing our video promo.  Please take the time to read the bio below, and be sure to come see her amazing photography on July 25th!

"My Name is Antonia Naglieri and I am a Video Editor and Producer. A lot of people don’t think of video creation as an art – but to me it is! To me, there’s something so exciting about taking normal footage and creating something unique out of it by using creative editing. In this way I like to think of myself as an “artist.” I also dabble in photography and make collages.

My Grandfather was an artist. Not in the traditional sense of a sculptor or portrait painter, but he seemed to know how to make everything and beautifully! I can still remember sitting in his dark, musty work room as a little girl, watching him carve beautiful ducks out of a plain block of wood. These ducks decorate my Grandparent's house along with beautifully painted birdhouses, shell and sand boxes, stained glass windows and more. My Grandfather also had cancer. Although he's no longer with us, his work is all around. Grandpa Sam Naglieri inspired me to be involved with Create a Cure."
